This project is done in the partial fulfillment of a brief assigned by the Her Majesty Prison Services (HMPS) to the Manchester Metropolitan University. The brief requires a team of 5 students (from various backgrounds of fashion including design, textiles, technology and marketing) to improve the current garment used by HMPS to clothe prisoners in crisis situations, i.e., inmates from the female prison population considered at extreme risk of suicide attempts and self-harm. The design criteria, with this being a highly specialized technical piece for a niche ‘market’ or end-user, were fairly tight, in that, many of the client’s improvement requirements highlighted the specific issues faced when these garments are subjected to extreme use. The resultant improvements have arisen from the client’s request to focus on reducing the ability to ‘deconstruct’, i.e. un-pick seams, and reducing the ability to cause shock to staff through indecent exposure and ‘dirty protests’.
More details of the project can't be disclosed as all participants had to sign a non-disclosure agreement prior to joining the project.
